India’s Creator Base Grew 4x in Five Years. So Why Are Most Creators Still Struggling to Build a Business?
31 Jul 2026
India now has 4.12 million creators, more than four times the number recorded in 2020. But the next phase of the creator economy is not about creating more creators. It is about helping existing creators turn their audiences into sustainable businesses.
The participation problem is being solved
The creator ecosystem has expanded rapidly, with non-metro creators now making up 66% of India's creator base. Average engagement has also risen from 1.8% in 2020 to 7.2% in 2025, showing that creators are building stronger relationships with their audiences as the ecosystem scales.
The monetisation gap is still significant
Despite this growth, most creators still complete only one paid brand campaign a year. The number of creators participating in brand campaigns has grown sharply, but repeat commercial opportunities have not grown at the same pace.
More campaigns are entering the ecosystem
Brands are clearly increasing their investment. Annual creator campaigns grew from around 14,000 to 42,000, while average campaign spending increased 3.6x between 2020 and 2025. The opportunity is growing, but creators need the structure to participate consistently in it.
From content creator to creator business
Sustainable income increasingly requires more than audience growth. Repeat brand partnerships, better commercial positioning, diversified revenue streams, professional negotiations, and operational support are becoming part of what separates a creator career from a creator business.
This is where talent management matters
The next generation of creator management is not simply about finding more deals. It is about building the systems that help creators access better opportunities, negotiate effectively, build long-term brand relationships, and create more predictable income.
What this means for creators:
The question is no longer: “How many followers do I have?”
It is: “How do I turn my influence into a sustainable business?”
The shift is clear:
India has already built the creator base.
The next opportunity is building creator businesses.
